Economic Roundtable
June 14th 2007
“Russia, 2007: A tale of two policies”
On Thursday 14th June 2007, RBCC held an Economic Roundtable
briefing with on of the most respected commentators on the
Russian economy – William Tompson, Senior Economist in the
Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD).
This was an informative briefing by one of the UK’s leading
economists on Russia. Bill, a highly regarded expert on Russia’s
economic policy and long-term growth prospects, is on leave from
the University of London, where he is Professor of Political
Economy. He is also an associate fellow of the Royal Institute
of International Affairs.
He has published widely on Russia, with his works including:
Khrushchev: A political Life, and The Soviet Union under
Brezhnev, as well as numerous articles and book chapters on
Soviet and Russian politics and economic policy. Together with
Christian Gianella, he prepared the sixth OECD Economic Survey
of the Russian Federation, which appeared in November 2006.
The presentation at the roundtable gave detailed review of
Russia's recent macroeconomic performance with an overview of
current challenges and the prospects that may lie ahead.
Bill’s unprecedented expertise on Russia encouraged vibrant
discussion and debate among the participants.
We would like to thank Bill Tompson for kindly offering to be a
guest speaker and for dedicating time to meet RBCC members and
guests. Many thanks to VTB Bank Europe for hosting the RBCC
Roundtable series.
